AEIOU Foundation today reaffirms its commitment to celebrating the strengths and qualities of autistic children and those who support them as people across the globe mark World Autism Awareness Day.
The international day of observance was declared in 2007 by the United Nations General Assembly, with the month of April also used to draw attention and understanding to the unique lived experiences of autistic people.
AEIOU Acting CEO Amber Friebe said while the early intervention service recognises and supports the autism community year-round, World Autism Awareness Day provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the progress of autism awareness and understanding in the wider community.
“We are committed to creating a more inclusive society for autistic people,” Ms Friebe said.
“Every autistic child deserves to be heard, valued and empowered, and we encourage the community to participate in meaningful conversations about autism, to challenge misconceptions and support initiatives that promote inclusion.”
“Our vision of every autistic child living their best life isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach – it is tailored to each child’s and family’s unique journey. It’s important, especially on days like today, to recognise that this journey can take many different forms.”
Ms Friebe said every child is unique in their own special way. “We are honoured that families trust us to nurture and support them to achieve their personal goals.”
To celebrate this day and raise awareness, AEIOU invites the community to the Be Awesome for Autism Fun Run & Family Fun Day this Sunday at UQ’s All Abilities Playground.
