Splash around on the Brisbane River and help a good cause
Thu, 18 Feb 10
One of the best ways to raise money for children with autism is to make a splash on the Brisbane River with Paddle for Kids on Sunday 28 February.
A unique and fun kayaking relay in aid of the AEIOU Foundation, Paddle for Kids includes kayak races and water games under the Story Bridge as well as entertainment in nearby Captain Burke Park.
Kayaking Olympic gold medalist and champion surf lifesaver, Clint Robinson O.A.M is a proud supporter of Paddle for Kids and will be demonstrating his skills throughout the event.
AEIOU Fundraising Manager, Justin Bobbermien said “our child-friendly carnival in the park will entertain onlookers and cheer squads while the real action happens on the 5-minute relay course set out on the beautiful Brisbane River.
Mr Bobbermien said “this is the second year for Paddle for Kids and it has a real focus on having fun. Serious kayakers and novice first-timers will enjoy the activities we have planned.”
“Teams of four paddlers will race in heats and progress through to a grand final. First prize is the prestigious ‘golden paddle’. The short course is designed for every level of fitness and experience,” he said.
Each team costs only $40 to register at www.aeiou.org.au/events and is encouraged to rally sponsorship online using EveryDay Hero. Call 07 3320 7500 to set up your fundraising page.
All kayaking and safety equipment will be supplied by Riverlife Adventure Centre. The only stuff paddlers need to bring on the day are clothes that can get wet and a cheer squad.
The AEIOU Foundation is a Queensland charity helping children diagnosed with autism by providing best-practice therapy and support.
Autism Spectrum Disorders affect approximately 1 in every 160 Australian children and impacts their communication, social understanding and behaviour. Even though autism has no cure, early intervention is proving to make a real difference in their lives. This is what the AEIOU Foundation provides.
Paddle for Kids will be in Captain Burke Park, Holman Street, Kangaroo Point from 8.30am to 2pm. Visit www.aeiou.org.au or call 07 3320 7500 for details.
