Early Symptoms of Autism: What to look for

Mon, 19 Sep 05

Symptoms of autism in infants vary greatly but follow a general pattern. Not all symptoms are present in all autistic children.

Early symptoms include:

  • the infant gradually becoming less responsive to their parents and other stimuli
  • Difficulty with feeding and toilet training
  • May put up resistance to affection or being cuddled
  • In social situations, may not wish to play with other children or toys in a normal manner
  • Extreme resistance to change of any kind
  • Tend to want to maintain established behaviour patterns
  • Impairments in verbal and non-verbal communication skills and behaviour, such as speech and facial expression.

There are currently 15 children aged between two and a half and five years old enrolled in AEIOU's educational program.

The program aims to develop the skills of the child in the following areas:

  • Social interaction and play skills
  • Cognitive development
  • Self-help/tasks of everyday life
  • Communication
  • Sensory integration
  • Fine and gross motor skills
