Early Symptoms of Autism: What to look for
Mon, 19 Sep 05
Symptoms of autism in infants vary greatly but follow a general pattern. Not all symptoms are present in all autistic children.
Early symptoms include:
- the infant gradually becoming less responsive to their parents and other stimuli
- Difficulty with feeding and toilet training
- May put up resistance to affection or being cuddled
- In social situations, may not wish to play with other children or toys in a normal manner
- Extreme resistance to change of any kind
- Tend to want to maintain established behaviour patterns
- Impairments in verbal and non-verbal communication skills and behaviour, such as speech and facial expression.
There are currently 15 children aged between two and a half and five years old enrolled in AEIOU's educational program.
The program aims to develop the skills of the child in the following areas:
- Social interaction and play skills
- Cognitive development
- Self-help/tasks of everyday life
- Communication
- Sensory integration
- Fine and gross motor skills
