Jane Harris and her son Oliver's story
Mon, 19 Sep 05
When our son Oliver was diagnosed with autism at the age of two, we quickly discovered that there was not a lot of assistance available in Brisbane. Although we were repeatedly told of the importance of early intervention, we were surprised and frustrated that there was nowhere for autistic children to go to get this kind of treatment.
Thankfully, Oliver commenced at AEIOU in February 2005. When he started at the school, his speech was very limited, his level of understanding was basic and he was at his happiest watching The Wiggles or playing by himself with coloured blocks (only the Wiggles colours) in a corner. He would also cry a lot as he had no other way of communicating with us.
The staff at AEIOU wasted no time in establishing an individual education program for Oliver focusing on his personal needs for development. We have been extremely impressed with their professionalism whilst at the same time maintaining a very loving environment for the kids.
Seven months later, Oliver is a different little boy. His communication and social skills have development far beyond our expectations. He still loves to watch the Wiggles, but now can sing along with them and knows every dance move!
We have also found the community of parents and staff at AEIOU a wonderful source of support and friendship.
We hope that other families are fortunate enough to have the opportunity which we are most grateful to have had for their child to be involved in such a beneficial and life changing program.
