Kevin Walters - AEIOU ambassador & Brisbane Broncos legend

Fri, 19 May 06

Kevin Walters - or Kevie as he is affectionately known - is one of only two Broncos players to have been a member of the club's five (5) premiership teams. The other is Michael Hancock.

Kevie first joined the Broncos in 1990, in the club"s third year, and made 271 first grade appearances for the club. Like his good mate Allan Langer, he never played a reserve grade game for the Broncos. He was vice-captain in the premiership victories of 92, 93, 97 and 98, and went on to captain the Broncos to their premiership win of 2000.

He retired after the grand final win in 2000, but was tempted into making a comeback for English club Warrington in 2001, again alongside Alfie. That was short-lived, as was his comeback for the Broncos later that season that lasted just three games before a serious eye injury finally ended his career.

With Langer and his twin brother Kerrod, Kevie helped form what was referred to as 'the Ipswich Connection’ at the Broncos, and the trio terrorised teams for almost a decade with their uncanny combination and their brilliant attacking play. And with Langer, Kevin formed one of the most respected half/five-eighth combinations of the modern era - for the Broncos, Queensland and Australia. His greatest attribute was his superb passing game, which so often created tries for his outside men.

He made 20 State of Origin appearances for Queensland.

Kevie also had a distinguished rep career, playing 10 Tests for Australia and being a member of 1990 and 1994 Kangaroo touring teams and the champion 1992 World Cup team.

After his retirement, Kevin coached the Toowoomba Clydesdales for 3 years from 2001 to 2003.  He then spent two years (2004 & 2005) as the assistant coach of the Brisbane Broncos. In 2006 Kevie will assist Mal Meninga with the coaching of the Queensland State of Origin Team.

Kevin is also the Patron of the Wesley Hospital Kim Walters Choices Programme which is a charity that assists women and men who are affected by breast cancer. The programme was started in 1998 through the Wesley Hospital at Auchenflower in Brisbane.
