AEIOU Foundation will host a thought provoking Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) workshop series on 20 April 2011 to coincide with Autism Awareness Month. The seminar will feature world-renowned clinical psychologist Professor Tony Attwood and Doctor Michelle Garnett, Founder and Director of ‘Minds & Hearts: A Specialist Clinic for Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism.
In the morning session, Professor Attwood, a clinical psychologist who has specialised in ASDs for more than 35 years, will be joined by Dr Garnett, a clinical psychologist and founder and Director of Minds & Hearts (a Specialist Clinic for Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism), to discuss cognitive abilities: a different way of thinking and learning, sharing strategies that may improve attention, organisational skills and academic achievement.
In the afternoon session, Professor Attwood and Dr Garnett will identify strategies to reduce scenarios where children with an ASD are being bullied and teased. According to Professor Attwood, parents and teachers hope integration with peers will be enjoyable and successful and some children will welcome the opportunity to play or socialise with other children who have an ASD, but there will be times when a child with ASD is more prone to bullying than typical children. In this presentation Professor Attwood & Dr Garnett will discuss why this is the case, and how we can manage and reduce these scenarios.
The seminar series is designed to share new insight into developing education and integration strategies for children with autism in their schools, in social environments and at home. It is designed as a professional development tool for Allied Health professionals, educators, childcare workers and parents and carers. Click here to download a PDF flyer.
